About 10,000 years ago, the landscape of the Sierre region was profoundly changed by a gigantic landslide of over 1km3 (cubic kilometer) of rock.
Following the retreat of the great Rhone glacier some 10,000 years ago, the landscape of the Sierre region was profoundly altered. A gigantic landslide of more than 1km3 (cubic kilometer) of rock suddenly descended from the heights of the Varneralp. The regular slope of the Flottuwald, an almost bare limestone slab that is still very visible today, represents the plane of the landslide. Between Salquenen and Granges, small hills break the monotony of the plain. The excursion goes in search of evidence of this prehistoric event.
